Mavoko Town is one of the eight sub-counties of Machakos County in Kenya, which is located around 30km southeast of Nairobi. The whole area of Mavoko covers 963 km2 including large rural parts. This SFD focuses on the service area of the local Water Service Provider (WSP) named Mavoko Water and Sewerage Company (MAVWASCO). The WSP serves the urban agglomerations of Mavoko, which are organized in four wards, namely Athi River, Kinanie, Muthwani and Syokimau / Mlolongo. Athi River is the most densely populated urban agglomeration and Mavoko has also been known as Athi River town. Due to the close location to Nairobi, its land availability and good transport connections along Mombasa Road, Mavoko is a quickly industrializing and growing area (UN-Habitat 2006). The population in the MAVWASCO service area is estimated to be 244,259 inhabitants and is predicted to double up to 593,182 residents by 2030.Mavoko heavily relies on onsite sanitation services (80% of the residents). It is estimated that only 18% of the population is connected to a sewer line and that 2% practices open defecation. 79% of the excreta in Mavoko is unsafely managed, which means that only 21% is managed safely.

Ouagadougou is the capital of Burkina Faso and the largest city of the country. It is located in the central region of Burkina Faso and had a population of 2,532,311 in 2015 (INSD, 2015) and projected total population of more than 2.7 million in 2017 (ONEA, 2017). The population density is estimated to be 903 persons per km2 within its municipal council area of 2,805 km2. Additionally, the annual growth rate of the population is estimated to be 7.6% (INSD, 2006).Less than 0.4% of the population is connected to a sewer. 93% of the population uses onsite sanitation systems, which are mainly pit latrines and septic tanks. Around 3% of the population practices open defecation. Only 36% of the excreta in Ouagadougou is managed safely, which means that 64% is unsafely managed. Ouahigouya is a mid-sized city located in the northern part of Burkina Faso and is the capital of the Province of Yatenga. Ouahigouya is approximately 180 km from Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. Ouahigouya district is composed of both urban and rural areas. The urban area is 108 km2 and is divided into 15 administrative areas. The rural area is composed of 37 villages. The total population is currently estimated to be 109,264 (INSD, 2017).Ouahigouya does not have a centralised system for wastewater and excreta treatment. 93% of the population uses onsite sanitation systems and the remaining 7% practices open defecation. 99% of the excreta in Ouahigouya is unsafely managed.

Panchgani is a hill station and municipal council in the Satara district of Maharashtra state. It is situated about 285 km from Mumbai and 18 km from Mahabaleshwar. The Panchgani municipal boundary comprises an area of 6.12 sq.km. As per Census 2011, Panchgani has a population of 14,897 persons, with a density of 2,434 persons per sq. km. Of this, 26% of the total population (3,850 persons) lives in slums.97% of the population in Panchgani uses offsite sanitation systems, with the remaining 3% using onsite sanitation. 85% of the excreta in Panchgani is safely managed, with 15% being unsafely managed.

Pandharpur is a well-known pilgrimage town on the banks of Bhima River in Sholapur district, Maharashtra, India. The population of Pandharpur is 98,923 and the floating population is around 10,000 to 40,000.39% of Pandharpur is dependent on offsite sanitation. Population connected to sewer line is 33% and userinterface discharging directly to open drain or ground is 6%. 53% of Pandharpur is dependent on onsite sanitation systems out of which 52% is dependent on septic tanks and 1% on pits. It was concluded that excreta of 44% of the population are not being managed safely in Pandharpur and 57% of the total excreta generated are safely managed.

Rishikesh is an important pilgrim city on the banks of river Ganga in Dehradun district of the Indian state, Uttarakhand. In April 2018, Rishikesh Municipality (Nagar Palika Parishad) was upgraded to Rishikesh Municipal Corporation (Nagar Nigam). Subsequently, the municipal area, population and number of wards have increased from 10 sq.km, 70,499 people and 20 wards, to 26 sq.km, 106,320 people and 40 wards. The equivalent daily floating population in Rishikesh is considered as 12,344.For Rishikesh, 49% of the excreta is estimated to be managed safely, with the remaining 51% considered unsafely managed.

Saidpur is a populous city in Nilphamari District, Bangladesh. It came into existence on 30 April 1958 as a municipality, and has 15 wards. It is an ‘A’ category municipality, which means it has had an annual income of BDT 6 million over the past three years. It covers an area of 34.42 km2. The Saidpur municipality has a total population of 127,104, and a population density of 4,442 people per km2.Saidpur has no wastewater treatment plant. All residents use onsite sanitation systems. Thirteen percent (13%) of the excreta flow is classified as safely managed, and the remaining eighty-seven (87%) percent is considered as unsafely managed.

Sakhipur is a town of Sakhipur Upazila, tangail, Bangladesh. The city is recognised as a Municipality and consists of 9 wards. The number of households in Sakhipur Municipality is 7,473 and the total population of the Municipality is 30,028, with a density of 1,100 persons per sq.km. The literacy rate is 57.6% (BBS, 2011). This city faces the challenges of a poor and insufficient waste management system. The city does not have a dedicated sewerage system. The whole city relies on onsite sanitation systems like pit latrines and septic tanks. Forty three percent (43%) of the excreta flow is classified as safely managed, and the remaining fifty seven (57%) percent is classified as unsafely managed.

Thatta is the main city of Thatta district, in the province of Sindh, Pakistan and has a population of 101,833 (Census, 2017) individuals in 17,998 households. Thatta city is spread over an area of 3823 km² (urban/Rural) and has a population density of 109 people per km².There are no pit latrines in Thatta, and there is almost no use of septic tanks. 85% of the population uses offsite sanitation systems and the remaining 15% practices open defecation. Only 9% of the excreta in Thatta is categorized as safely managed, thus 91% is not managed safely.

The area covered for this SFD is 310km², which is beyond the administrative boundaries as the city developed peripherally in an unregulated manner. The population growth rate was nearly 5.3% per year between 2001 and 2015 and 5.7 between 2015 and 2020 (CUY, 2015).Around 3% of the population uses offsite sanitation systems, with the remaining 97% using onsite sanitation systems. This report summarizes the results obtained from an on-line survey conducted by the Shit FlowDiagram Promotion Initiative (SFD-PI) as a key deliverable of the SFD project. The survey was launchedon April 11th, 2018 and ran for three weeks until May 1st, 2018. The survey was intended to collect people’s opinions about different aspects of the SFD project,including the web portal, the manual, various tools, all activities related to the SFD-PI and theirusability. The output of this survey is valuable to the SFD-PI for improving the tools and methodsavailable and improving the overall approach of the SFD-PI.
